Benue govt pays bill of 10 year-old mother
Benue State Government has intervened to offset the medical bills as well as take responsibility of a 10-year-old girl who was impregnated by a minor and delivered through caesarian.
The 10-year-old who was operated on through caesarian by the medical director of the hospital in Makurdi, Dr Mike IjIko, said the girl and the baby are in good condition but requires other forms of care. He then urges the government to pursue cases of young girls in similar conditions.
While the Director of Child Development of the ministry of women affairs, Mrs Ann Yaji, who represented it's commissioner, Tabitha Igirgi, said the ministry in collaboration with the support of the wife of the state governor has taken over the welfare of the girl and her baby and promised to take care of them.
She, however, thanked the members of the civil society organization for their swift response and the support given to the girl as well as members of the public for their donations to her and her baby.
Meanwhile a member of the civil society organization, Ukan Kurugh, who spoke to newsmen at the hospital, said the quick intervention on the young girl was her saving grace adding that the suspected father, a 17-year-old is now in police custody after he was arrested yesterday, Monday when the girl had opened up who was behind it.
