Expert identifies causes of flooding in Ibadan
Deforestation, lack of development management, closing of water cannals and reduced infiltration have been identified as the causes of flooding in Ibadan metropolis.
Yann Leclerg, the Project Manager for the ongoing development of Ibadan City Master plan, while presenting an update on the project to members of the Oyo State Executive Council said the project is now at the third stage while stakeholders engagement had been held throughout all the stages.
He disclosed that estimating a future population for the city is critical for adequate planning while the existing problems of flooding and unplanned development are the outcome of inadequate planning for the city.
The Commissioner for Finance in the state, Abimbola Adekambi informed the gathering that the state government decided to come up with the masterplan for Ibadan following the devastating effects of flooding recorded in the city in 2011.
Responding after series of recommendations by members of the executive council Governor Abiola Ajimobi charged the contractor to consider the new areas that are springing up across ibadan in the development plans.
