Interior ministry got zero capital allocation in 2019 - Aregbesola
The interior ministry has so far received zero allocation for capital expenditure in 2019, the Minister, Rauf Aregbesola has revealed.
Aregbesola stated this on Friday during a Joint Senate/House Committee on Interior Budget Defence session.
The Interior Ministry which oversees agencies such as the immigration, customs, civil defense and the fire service laments the overall poor budgetary allocation for the ministry.
The shortage of funds for the 2020 fiscal year has been a common narrative since the onset of the budget defence session.
And the Interior Ministry that oversees agencies whose duties it is to ensure the protection of the country’s internal security is not exempted from the problem.
The Interior Minister is practically resigned to fate owing to the harsh economic realities on the ground.
On the sorry state of prisons now known as correctional facilities in Nigeria, the minister said employing innovative ways of making them self-sustaining is being explored.
Against the backdrop of recent Onitsha market fire disasters, the issue of tackling fire outbreaks also came to the fore.
Meanwhile, the Joint Committee on Interior is scheduled to reconvene on Monday for the continuation of the budget defence session.
