Supreme Court swears in 57 Senior Advocates of Nigeria.
The Supreme Court on Monday swore in 57 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria with a charge to them to be above board and uphold the ethics of the noble profession.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who presided over the event disclosed that, a total of 114 applicants applied for the position out of which 101 are advocates and 13 academics.
Ariwoola added that after necessary screening, Out of the number, 57 are advocates while one is an Academic.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria charged the Senior Advocates to see their elevation as a burden noting that, they should watch their utterances, actions and the kind of company tjey keep, as they now assume the role of Ministers of the Court,
On the legal year of the apex court, Justice Ariwoola, said between 12th day of September, 2022 to the 11th day of July, 2023, 1,271 matters were filed before the court, comprising of motions and appeals.
Out of these, the court heard 388 political appeals, 215 criminal appeals, and 464 civil appeals. Similarly, the court considered a total number of 49 criminal motions, 153 civil motions, and 2 political motions.
