Senate Investigate IMC over Alleged Squandering of N40billion

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday resolved to carry out a thorough investigation on alleged Financial Recklessness by the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Galaxy’s Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that the aim of the inquest by the Senate is to know the whereabouts of N40 billion allegedly squandered by the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Commission within the last three months.

This is a sequel to a motion sponsored by Rivers East Senator, Thompson Sekibo.

The motion titled: "Urgent Need to Investigate Alleged Financial Recklessness in the NDDC" hints at financial Recklessness in the Commission one which the IMC is allegedly complicit, which he said must be investigated.

The lead debate by the sponsor of the motion elicited mixed views from a cross-section of the Senators in plenary.

In the light of allegations contained in the motion, the Senate, therefore, resolved to set up an ad-hoc Committee to be chaired by Senator Olubunmi Adetunbi to look into the financial transactions of the IMC within the period under review.

The weighty allegations heaped on the Niger Delta Committee owing to the motion did not go down well with its Chairman, Senator Peter Nwaboshi.

In his ruling, the Senate President said its decision to set up an ad-hoc Committee to carry out the inquest is to ensure a thorough job is done to get to the root of the matter.

Members of the Ad- hoc committee which has a four-week timeline, are Senators Jika Haliru [APC, Bauchi Central], Tanko Almakura [APC, Nasarawa South], Abdulfatai Buhari [APC, Oyo North], and Chukwuka Utazi [PDP, Enugu North]; others are Ibrahim Hadeija [APC, Jigawa North East] and  Degi-Eremienyo Biobarakuma [APC, Bayelsa East].
