Army moves against herdsmen

As part of the efforts to combat herdsmen' menace in Nigeria, the chief of army staff,  Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai has revealed that troops have been deployed across Benue and neighboring states to put a stop to the recurring herdsmen/farmers clashes.

General Buratai made the disclosure at the presentation of farm implements to the Nigerian Army by the federal ministry of agriculture and rural development; an event which took place at the Nigerian Army cattle ranch in Abuja on Tuesday, January 9.

The presentation is coming in the wake of the serial face-off between farmers and herdsmen throughout the country.

It would be recalled that many schools of thought had earlier suggested ranching as the solution to the clashes and the Nigerian army through its collaboration with the ministry of agriculture says its setting an example of the ranches for others to emulate.

Presentation equipment to establish the ranch in Abuja, by the ministry of agriculture is to compliment the army’s efforts at setting the ranching pace.
The chief of army staff expressed optimism that the initiative will help end clashes between herdsmen and farmers as well as address agricultural challenges facing the country.

For the minister of agriculture, it was a laudable move of the military worthy of emulation.

The minister, however, called on other Nigerians to complement the government effort at ensuring a self-sufficient economy by embracing agriculture.

Some Nigerians in a similar vein, expressed believe that the clashes between the herders and farmers may end soon if such initiatives are imbibed by other stakeholders.
