Bye Elections: INEC Meets Security Agencies Cautions Political Party Against Violence During Polls
Ahead of the February 3, 2014 bye and re-run elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has charged security agencies to take quick action against perpetrators of electoral violence in the course of the election.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, gave the charge at a meeting of the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security held at the commission’s headquarters on Tuesday.
Yakubu noted that the conduct of isolated elections such as bye-elections and re-run elections can be very challenging due to handful of polling units to be involved in the election, urging security agencies to pay attention to the potentials for disruptive behaviour by some candidates and their supporters.
He also advised politicians to caution their candidates and supporters to resist the use of incendiary statements that could incite violence and undermine the peaceful conduct of the elections.
The Inec Chairman hinted that the Commission has also released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the two off-cycle Governorship elections in Edo State scheduled for September 21 2024 and that of Ondo State holding on November 16, 2024.
He noted that party primaries for Edo State will commence between 1st- 24th February 2024 while that of Ondo State will hold between 6th and 27th April 2024.
