Crisis Rocks Oyo NUT as Secondary School Teachers Pull Out

A fresh crisis is brewing in the Oyo state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers as Secondary School Teachers have decided to pull out of the union.

Before now, both primary and secondary school teachers in the state are members of the union until secondary school teachers pulled out to establish Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Nigeria.

Speaking with Correspondent Kunle Ojo on their decision, the Secretary of ASUSS in Oyo State, Comrade Ranti Oluwemimo and the Vice-chairman of the Association, Comrade Ogunlade Olumide disclosed that ASUSS has been in place in Oyo since 2014 but has no backing of the state government.

The stated that based on the recent court judgment which empowered the association to operate, Secondary school teachers in the state decided to take their destiny in their hands and pulled out of NUT.

Reacting to the decision of the secondary school teachers, the Leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo state in a statement signed by the Chairman, Comrade Tojuade Adedoyin and the Secretary, Comrade Raji faulted the action of the teachers saying it was a misrepresentation of the court judgment.

According to the statement by the NUT and made available to our Correspondent, the Judgment of the court delivered on the 15th January 2021 was clear and unambiguous as it rendered the judgment of the Court of Appeal incompetent on the ground that members of the bench who delivered the judgment were not properly constituted to adjudicate on the matter.

The union maintained that it remain the only recognized and registered trade union that is empowered by the trade union act to unionize both teachers in primary and secondary schools in Nigeria.
