International organizations have advocated the release of Sunday Jackson from death row after a decade, asserting his innocence. Recalling an incident recently in Adamawa State where Jackson defended himself against an attack by a Fulani herder, Buba Bawuro resulting in the herder's unfortunate demise from Jackson's actions.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court's decision led to Jackson's sentencing to death. Executive Director of the US-Nigeria Law group, Emmanuel Ogebe, called for clemency at a media briefing in Abuja on Monday.
He discussed the Supreme Court's verdict, emphasizing inconsistencies in the judgment, particularly the discrepancy in the number of stabs attributed to Jackson, changing from two to three. Ogebe also shared a personal account relating to a cattle incident, underscoring the ongoing crisis and the importance of community-led conflict resolution.
He emphasized the necessity for cooperation between the Fulani communities and local authorities to prevent external intruders from inciting disorder within the nation. Furthermore, Ogebe stressed the significance of continuous advocacy and community engagement in addressing the crisis at hand.
