Senate Decries Budgetary Neglect of Environmental Agencies
The Senate Committee on Environment has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the inadequate allocation of funds to the Ministry of Environment in the 2024 budget. Speaking after an interactive session, the Committee Chairman, Senator Ned Nwoko, described the situation as inhuman, highlighting the plight of over 5,000 Nigerians who have not received their salaries due to funding shortfalls.
Galaxy Television reports that during the session, the Registrar of the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON), Dr. Yakubu Mohammed Baba, disclosed that the agency's staff have been without salaries since January 1, 2024. EHCON and 13 other professional bodies were initially excluded from budgetary allocations. While the other 13 have been reinstated, EHCON remains absent from the budget
In response to the concerns, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mahmud Adam Kambari, who represented the Minister of Environment, Hon. Balarabe Lawal, assured that the issue is being addressed. Kambari revealed that the matter has already been escalated to both the president and the National Assembly for immediate resolution.
