Social intervention fund: Senate requests name of beneficiaries
The Nigerian Senate has demanded the submission of list of beneficiaries of the N5000 social intervention scheme, an initiative which was one of the campaign promises of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Senate Committee on Appropriation made this demand Thursday at a Budget defence hearing attended by the Special Adviser to the President on National Social Investment Programme, Maryam Uwais.
Chairman of the Committee, Senator Danjuma Goje expressed disappointment that Nigerians are yet to feel the impact of the social intervention programme of the Buhari-led govt. despite the sum of 500 billion naira appropriated in 2016 and 2017 respectively for the scheme.
Sen. Goje laments that the Social Intervention Programme seems to be performing at cross purpose with the intention of the President as they are doing very poorly in the area of publicity.
On their part, a cross section of members of the Committee on Appropriation question the criteria for selecting beneficiaries of the social intervention programme as only 20 states have so far benefited.
Responding, the Special Adviser to the President on National Social Investment Programme explained the criteria for selecting beneficiaries of the scheme.
Recall the N5000 social intervention scheme is a key part of Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign promise.
