Nigeria, Africa Can Produce World Boxing Champions - WBF President

As Nigerian born Rilwan Oyekola faces Argentine boxer, Lucas Montezuma for the World Super Featherweight title belt, the President, World Boxing Federation (WBF), Mr Howard Goldberg has said Nigeria has potential boxers that can become World champions.

He said Nigeria and the rest of Africa have talented boxers that can represent the country at the world stage and make the continent proud.

Goldberg spoke in Oyo state during the weigh-in of the boxers ahead of the international super featherweight boxing bout.

Correspondent Kunle Ojo reports that the WBF president who noted that Nigerian boxers are great said he is doing everything humanly possible to work with the President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) Dr Rafiu Ladipo to discover more talents for Nigeria and Africa at large.

While speaking, Ladipo said another history is about to be made in Ibadan, as the World Boxing Federation (WBF) has officially sanctioned the International Super Featherweight title bout between Ridwan and Lucas.

He said since 1963, Oyo State has not had any title challenge but optimistic that Rilwan Oyekola will make Oyo State proud again.

At the end of the weigh-in, Oyekola weighed in 58.79 while his opponent, Lucas weighed in 58.97.

Other fights expected on Sunday include Olajide Fijabi and Moses Doses, Akeem Sadiku Dodo against George Hamuzu among others.

Ridwan, also known as 'Scorpion' will be squaring up against a new title contender, Montesino for the vacant WBF title.
