LP Reps Caucus lauds Supreme Court Friday Verdict

The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the House of Representatives has lauded today’s Supreme Court ruling that removed Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman, describing the judgment as a turning point for the party’s stability and future reinvention.

The caucus said the decision is a stern reminder to political leaders who behave like autocrats in a democracy, where power should ultimately reside with the people.

In a statement issued shortly after the Supreme Court judgment, the leader of the caucus, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, called the development “a veritable tonic for the revitalization of the party,” noting that the ruling brings an end to a turbulent chapter in the Labour Party’s leadership crisis.

The apex court’s five-member panel unanimously overturned the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had upheld Abure’s position as national chairman. The Supreme Court ruled that the appellate court lacked jurisdiction in the matter, having already determined that the core issue involved internal party leadership.

Hon. Ogene expressed optimism that the clear and decisive judgment would pave the way for the Labour Party to rebuild and reposition itself.

He said the party is now expected to roll out necessary reforms to restore internal harmony and reaffirm its commitment to democratic values and the welfare of the Nigerian people.

He disclosed that by next week, the National Caretaker Committee (NCC), led by former Minister of Finance Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, is expected to convene an all-inclusive stakeholders’ meeting to chart a new course for the party.

According to Ogene, the crisis that plagued the party could have been avoided if Abure and his allies had listened to the caucus and addressed concerns raised by other party stakeholders.

He accused the former chairman of ignoring repeated calls for caution, instead choosing to act with what he described as “arrogance and a lust for power.”

He recalled that in March 2024, the LP Reps caucus urged the postponement of the party’s National Convention scheduled for the end of that month, citing unresolved leadership disputes and the need for broader consultations.

Their position, he said, was motivated by a desire to safeguard the party’s unity and long-term sustainability.
