Reps Minority Caucus Calls Prosecution Of Those Responsible For Minors’ Detention
The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has called for a thorough investigation, prosecution, and discipline of all individuals and government agencies involved in the detention of 76 minors, who were charged with terrorism, treason, and arson by the Nigerian Police Force for their participation in the #EndBadGovernance protest.
In a statement signed by Minority Leader Hon. Kingsley Chinda, Minority Leader Ali Isa J.C., Deputy Minority Whip Hon. Aliyu Madaki, and Deputy Minority Whip Hon. George Ozodinobi, the Caucus condemned the detention as "despicable, callous, and inhuman," citing it as a national disgrace with global ramifications.
The commended President Tinubu for his prompt directive following the children’s arraignment, which led to the Attorney-General’s intervention to take control and dismiss the charges entirely.
The Caucus emphasized that those involved in detaining the minors for approximately 95 days, instead of allowing them to continue their education, trade, or vocations, must face consequences to deter future misconduct.
Acknowledging the psychological and health challenges the children may have endured, the Caucus called for reformatory therapy and medical support as they reunite with their families.
Additionally, they urged for reparation packages to be provided to the affected minors and their families to alleviate the hardship, pain, and emotional trauma experienced during their wrongful detention.
