Expert tasks FG on Yam Exportation sustainability
Following the Federal government's policy on yam exportation, Director of University Farms, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta Michael Jayeola says that yam production which has been on decline in some parts of the country should be resuscitated, adding that yam is a major staple food in Nigeria.
Speaking to Galaxy television correspondent John Felix, Jayeola says the sustainability of the yam policy can be guaranteed if Nigeria produces enough yam, go into mechanized production and adequately carry out survey that would boost yam production for both local consumption and exportation.
Speaking further, Jayeola says that government needs to awaken the interest of farmers in a bid to produce more yams and encourage mechanization.
