The Philadelphia 76ers will hold a ceremony to retire the jersey of NBA great Allen Iverson on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Centre in Philadelphia.

Iverson’s NBA career began when he was selected first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1996 NBA Draft, becoming the shortest ever first-round pick at just 6ft 0in (1.83 m) tall.

In his 10-year career at Philadelphia, he achieved the highest-scoring average in team history (28.1), and is second of all-time on the points list (19 583). He earned the league's scoring title four times - in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2005.

Iverson was as adept at scoring as he was at steals winning that title three times in a row from 2001-2003. He won the NBA MVP award in 2001 - the shortest and lightest in history - and also claimed the NBA All-Star Game MVP the same year and again in 2005.

Iverson left the 76ers in December 2006 to play for the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons and the Memphis Grizzlies over the next three years.

In December 2009 he returned to his ‘spiritual home’ but in February 2010 he left the 76ers again, this time for good.

Iverson announced his official retirement from the sport in January 2013 putting an end to an incredible career in which he earned a regular season career-scoring average of 26.7 points per game, ranked sixth all-time, and a playoff career scoring average of 29.7 points per game - second only to Michael Jordan.
